Thermo Vac is a steel fabrication company, located in Oxford, MI, bringing fabrication and wear solutions to a diverse range of industries worldwide, including material handling, power generation, aerospace, NAVSEA, mining, etc. We are seeking a self-motivated and ambitions AutoCAD and Inventor drafter / designer to work with our engineers in developing shop drawing sets, from 3D models as well as from customer supplied 2D drawings. The ideal candidate should be able to take a complete 3D model and create a comprehensive set of 2D shop drawings, including BOM, individual component details, assembly drawings, cut sheets, and work instructions. This candidate should also be capable of taking 2D drawings and converting them into 3D models as the company is in the early stages of transitioning to a 3D model driven workflow. The position will require frequent communication with engineering, and manufacturing personnel to ensure adherence to shop standards and equipment capabilities. The employee will need to be comfortable spending time on the shop floor and interacting with shop employees to assist in interpreting drawing sets during the fabrication process. This position will be office based, but may have potential for occasional work-from-home on an as-needed basis. This position will not require travel.
Design Engineer Required Qualifications:
- Proficient in AutoCAD
- Proficient in Autodesk Inventor, with a focus on sheetmetal modeling, though Solidworks or other 3D modeling experience will be considered
- Ability to read and interpret relevant information from supplied data, including 3D models, 2D drawings, and specifications documents
- Ability to create functional and complete shop drawing sets from 2D drawings, and 3D modeled assemblies
- Ability to create flat pattern data and export it from Inventor to AutoCAD files for laser cutting, forming, machining, etc.
- Ability to work with customer CAD data supplied in various formats, primarily DWG and STEP files
- Ability to use various measurement tools to reverse engineer customer supplied parts and assemblies
- Proficient in Microsoft office applications
- Good written and verbal communication skills
Design Engineer Additional qualifications:
- Knowledge of Autodesk Inventor best practices in a shared environment, including shared styles, file management, content center, workflow, etc.
- Knowledge of various fabrication processes used in turning a sheet of steel into a final product, including cutting (laser / plasma / shear), forming (break press), fitting, welding, sandblasting, assembly, and painting
- Flat pattern development of sheet and plate steel shapes including cylinders, cones, transitions, etc. using manual layout techniques as well as 3D modeling tools
- Basic knowledge of various steel types including stainless steels, mild steels, armor, pipe, tube, structural, etc
- Basic knowledge of GD&T
- Knowledge of various machining processes and tools including vertical mill, lathe, horizontal mill, grinding, slotting, drilling, etc.
- Ability to read and interpret weld symbols
- Experience with MRP software, Epicor preferred
- Understand the importance of following company standards for all digital data
- Candidates should be prepared to show examples of previous work (print or digital portfolio).
